Weekly Update (5/31 & 6/1)

The school year has flown by, and summer is finally upon us!

Our end of the year class party will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30.

Also, a reminder that Wednesday, the last day of school, is a noon dismissal.

Sample Explorer Display

Here is a sample of the explorer display. The required parts are student name, explorer name, portrait, flag, map of route, and interesting facts.

Weekly Update (5/23-5/27)

It is hard to believe, but the final full week of school is upon us!

I have really enjoyed getting to know your children and working with them this year. It has been a lot of fun and very rewarding.

Here are the concepts covered this week:

Math- We will continue reviewing multiplication facts and multiplication algorithms

Language Arts- There is no spelling or vocabulary this week. We will finish reading Morning Girl.

Science- We will finish the unit, Electricity.

Social Studies- This week we will continue with European exploration of North America.

The pieces for the explorer displays went home on Friday (5/20). The displays are due by this Friday (5/27), but can come in to school any day this week.

Explorer Videos

The explorer videos are complete and ready to be viewed. Our time slot is this Friday, 5/27 at 2:00. Prior to viewing the videos, the students will perform a readers theater in the classroom at 1:30. All are welcome!

Vocabulary Quiz

Many of the scores from the quiz on Friday were lower than normal. Today the students did an additional vocabulary activity using the words from last week to help boost up the grades. The scores from today's activity will be averaged in with the quiz from Friday. Students can also earn some extra credit by correcting the ones they missed.

Explorer Project

Students have been working on explorer projects in class. As an enrichment to the report, students are to work on a trifold display about their explorer. The pieces of the display will be completed in school, but the assembly will be homework. The display items will go home on Friday 5/20 and the displays will be due Friday 5/27.

The trifold should include the following

• Title (explorer's name) and student name
• Interesting facts about the explorer
• Hand drawn portrait of the explorer
• Map outlining the route(s) of the voyage(s)
• Flag of the explorer's birth country
• Any pictures/decorations to demonstrate creativity, imagination, and style that represents and showcases the explorer

Language Arts-

Vocabulary will come from Wordly Wise, and the quiz will be this Friday (5/20).

The spelling words this week are self-selected, and the test will be this Friday (5/20).

Science- We will continue the unit, Electricity.

Social Studies- This week we will continue with European exploration of North America.

Also, we will continue working on the explorer projects.

A Message from the PE Team about Splash Day

We will be hosting the Lower Division Splash Day on Wednesday, May 18^th, 2011. The event will take place during each grade’s normal PE period and will last approximately 30 min. Splash Day consists of a variety of safe and fun water games and toys. Activities are designed to soak, spray, and splash. Students will not be swimming or submerging themselves in water in any capacity. Participants are sure to enjoy the large inflatable water slide again this year. A dry area, “The Beach,” will be available to any students not wishing to get wet or participate in Splash Day. Equipment, games, activities and supervision will be present for those students playing on the Beach.

What to bring/wear:

· Bring appropriate swimwear to school to change into or wear swimwear to school under their school uniform. Please keep in mind each child must wear their regular school uniform at all times except during their PE period.

· Sunscreen and/or Hat

· Towel

Language Arts- We will begin a class novel, "Morning Girl", this week.

Vocabulary will come from Wordly Wise, and the quiz will be next Friday (5/20).

The spelling theme is "-ain, -ture, -sure," and the test will be this Friday (5/13).

Science- We will continue the unit, Light.

Social Studies- This week we will continue with European exploration of North America.

Field Trip

On Friday, May 20th, the third grade will be going to the Tampa Bay History Center for a field trip.

Each class will need a parent chaperone to accompany the class on the field trip. We will leave campus at 9:00 and return around 1:30.

Also, we will eat lunch at the center before returning to school. Please pack a lunch for your child on that day or SAGE will be preparing sack lunches for those children who would like to purchase lunch on this day (cost is $4.95). An order form will be sent home on Thursday, or you can download the form here. Please sign and return it by May 10th.

Parent Helpers Needed

Mrs. Baralt is looking for parent volunteers to help assist and supervise third graders while filming around campus for their explorer movie projects next Wednesday, 4/20 and Thursday 4/21. Message from the PE team about Field Day

The lower division is excited about this year’s installment of Field Day. We have put together what is sure to be a fun event for all. Your child will be assigned to a team designated by a color. The students will be split by grades into six K-2 teams and six 3-4 teams. We ask that your children wear their team’s colored athletic clothing and proper athletic shoes to school on Field Day, April 5th, 2010. Please do not feel required to purchase any new clothing for this event; we simply ask that your child be identifiable, for example, as the Red Team or in Shorecrest Spirit Wear. We appreciate your cooperation and support of this enjoyable event.

The coaches will coordinate, organize, assist and instruct all volunteers on their assigned event. Field day for the students will begin promptly at 10:00 and last until 11:30.
